Accept card payments on Shopify in Hungary without Shopify Payments

Shopify Payments is available in Hungary, so most stores there should simply use it. It is built in, it pays out in one place, and it is the only way to avoid Shopify's third-party transaction fee. This page is for the smaller group of merchants in Hungary who want or need their card payments to run through their own Whop account instead, and it is honest about what that costs and what you give up.

Is Shopify Payments available in Hungary?

Yes. Hungary was on Shopify's list of supported countries when we checked on 19 September 2026. The list had 40 countries and regions on it. If your business is registered in Hungary and sells products Shopify Payments accepts, you can switch it on in Settings, then Payments, in your Shopify admin.

When merchants in Hungary still choose their own processor

• You already sell memberships, courses or subscriptions on Whop and want one balance, one payout and one dispute queue for both sides of the business.
• Your Shopify Payments application was declined, or your account is on hold or under review, and the store needs to keep taking card payments while you sort that out. Read the guide on Shopify Payments holds linked below first: responding to Shopify is the first job, not switching.
• Your business is registered somewhere Shopify Payments does not cover, even though you sell to buyers in Hungary.
• You want a checkout page you can design freely on a standard Shopify plan, with order bumps and post-purchase offers.

Moving to Whop is not a way around a processor's rules. Whop has its own list of prohibited businesses, reviews new accounts, and places reserves on accounts it considers risky. If Shopify Payments turned your business down because of what you sell, read Whop's list before you assume the answer there will be different.

What it costs compared with staying on Shopify Payments

With Shopify Payments you pay Shopify's card rate for your plan and nothing else. With a third-party gateway from Shopify's list you pay the gateway's rate plus Shopify's third-party transaction fee, which Shopify's pricing page lists by plan:

Pendym is not a gateway inside Shopify's checkout. It replaces the checkout page, and paid orders are written back into Shopify. Whether Shopify charges its transaction fee on those orders for your store and plan is something to confirm with Shopify against your own plan terms. We would rather you ask than take our word for it.

Can a business in Hungary sell through Whop?

This is the part to check before anything else, because Pendym only works if Whop will pay you. Here is what we could verify from Whop's own documentation on 19 September 2026, and no more than that.

• Hungary is on Whop's published list of supported payout countries, and it is not on Whop's list of sanctioned or unsupported countries.
• To withdraw, you set up Whop Payments from the Balances page: choose your country, then complete identity verification by filling in your details, linking a bank account and uploading ID.
• Whop says sellers outside the United States need a bank account that accepts the currency of their registered country. It converts what you earn into that currency before paying out, so plan on payouts in Hungarian forint rather than in US dollars.
• Whop says different countries get different payout options (bank account, and in some countries a mobile wallet or crypto wallet). It does not publish which options each country gets. You see yours on the Balances page once your business is created.
• Standard payouts take up to 5 business days according to Whop, and Whop can hold a withdrawal for compliance review.

We could not find per-country seller requirements for Hungary beyond this, so we are not going to invent any. Create your Whop business first, choose Hungary, finish verification and look at the payout options Whop shows you. It is free, and it tells you for certain before you touch your store.

Currency and language at the checkout

Pendym quotes prices live from your Shopify store, so the checkout shows the same prices as your product pages: Hungarian forint (HUF) if that is what your store charges, or the buyer's Shopify Market currency if you sell in several. Shipping rates, tax and discount codes come from Shopify too. Whop says it supports more than 135 currencies. Pendym's own 0.5% fee is charged in the currency of each sale, so no exchange rate is applied to it.

Hungarian is one of the 18 languages Pendym's checkout is translated into, so a store running in Hungarian gets a Hungarian checkout with no setup.

Things specific to Hungary

Hungarian stores usually price in forints, and forint prices are normally shown without decimals. The checkout shows the prices your Shopify store quotes. Place one small real order to confirm the forint charge looks right on the buyer's card statement and in Whop.

Cash on delivery remains common in Hungary. Pendym is a card checkout that charges through Whop, and it does not offer cash on delivery. If a real share of your orders is paid on delivery, weigh that before you switch the checkout over.

The four setup steps

1. 1Connect Whop. Click Connect with Whop in Pendym and approve it on Whop, choosing the business your sales should be paid into. It is one click if your Whop business already exists.
2. 2Verify a card. Pendym places a $1 hold and releases it straight away, so nothing is charged. The 0.5% fee per order is billed to this card later.
3. 3Connect Shopify. Create a small app in your own Shopify Dev Dashboard and paste its Client ID and Secret into Pendym. Pendym shows every click and then checks that each permission is active. You need to be the store owner or a staff member with app development permission.
4. 4Paste one line into theme.liquid, just above the closing body tag. Nothing changes for buyers until this step, and you can switch the checkout off again in Settings at any time.

What it costs

We do not set or control Whop's rates, so read them at the source. When we checked on 19 September 2026, Whop's fees page listed a base card rate plus an extra percentage for international cards and another when a payment needs currency conversion. Both extras are likely to matter for a business in Hungary that sells to buyers abroad, so work them into your prices.

What this does not do

• It is not a Shopify payment gateway. You will not find Pendym or Whop under Settings, then Payments. It replaces the checkout page instead.
• Buyers no longer see Shopify's checkout page, so anything that lives on that page, such as checkout apps and extensions, stops applying.
• The Shop Pay, PayPal and Google Pay express buttons in your cart are hidden while Pendym is on, because they would send buyers to Shopify's checkout and around your Whop account.
• Shopify gift cards cannot be redeemed at the Pendym checkout. Shopify discount codes do work.
• It does not offer cash on delivery or add local payment methods of its own. Buyers pay with what Whop offers your business.
• It does not make your money safer from holds by itself. Whop reviews accounts, can place reserves, and has its own prohibited business list. Read it before you start.
